smallersun_20 Solar Photovoltaic panels are fitted to the roof, or they can be mounted freestanding.

smallersun_20 Solar Panels generate direct electrical current (DC) during daylight hours. This flows into an inverter which converts the electrical energy into alternating current (AC) which is used by the appliances in your home. Solar panels work best in sunlight but rest assured they can still pull in energy when it is overcast as it’s all about daylight, not heat. You can see at a glance how much energy is being generated via the Generation Meter .
smallersun_20 The AC flows from the inverter into the fuse box . If you are using electricity, perhaps cooking, watching TV or running the washing machine, the power from the solar panels flows straight into these appliances. Any additional energy top up needed will come from the National Grid . If the electricity isn’t needed at the time, it goes directly into the National Grid so that other consumers can use it.

smallersun_20 Effectively your house becomes a mini power station. Thanks to government incentive the Feed in Tariff which was introduced in 2010, if you’re generating power from solar energy, you are paid a Tax Free fee per KWh produced, even if you’ve used that energy yourself. This payment can be used to offset your fuel bills, bringing you substantial savings year on year.
